The weather held up nicely yesterday for the third and last qualifier held at our terrain to which 15 teams rushed from all parts of the region to finally decide the composition and seeding of Sussex Pétanque’s (SXP) Championship and Challenge squads for the Inter-Regionals in September. It turned out to be an excellent day for the three teams comprising all eight club members participating this year.
Ajit-tated Seagullzzz – Terry Gibbons (not playing this day), Alan Issler, Ian Maynard and Joe Simmonds-Issler – starting the day in 10th position overall, played very well, including beating Crowbright 2 in a closely fought semi-final, to reach the final (see below). Coming second on the day meant they shot up into 5th position overall. Great result!
Crowbright 2 including Tony Mann, starting in first position on the day, beat the strong The Smiths and lost only one game (to Ajit) to come third on the day and thus 2nd overall (as the original Crowbright with Tony, Ian and Alan Constable came last year). Excellent result!
Alvis – David Alfred, Stephan Alfred and Gareth Jarvis – came first after the morning leagues (including a two-hour marathon with their first opponents of the day) for the third time running. Having failed twice before at the semi-final stage coming third each time and starting in second position on the day, this time they got to the final where they met the fellow club members of team Ajit – an all-BHPC affair – whom they defeated 13-6. Alvis were thus finally seeded 1st overall, as they were last year. Brill!
With his customary efficiency, the competition and all the paperwork was masterminded by Tony Mann, SXP Playing Officer, ably supported by Alan Constable, SXP President. Tony also led the club team preparing the terrain. Many thanks to Tony and also to BHPC and its members for their help, hospitality and support before and on the day which was amusingly enlivened by
All our very best wishes to our members and all their SXP team-mates who go forth -with hope in their hearts – into the jaws of Division 1 in the Inter-Regionals later this year.
