Competitions Secretary, Ian Maynard writes:
“Yesterday fifteen club members played in the Club Triples tournament. Each team played every other team over five rounds, with a bye in one round. So with just four matches to play it was not too tiring and we were lucky with the weather, when sitting around.
The first shock came in the opening match when AJIAN (Alan, Jill C and Ian) defeated Alvis (David A, Gareth and Stephan) one of the top Sussex teams. Jill G, Julie and David M enjoyed an equally tight win over Ann, Mike and Rohan (while the Railway Children -Di C, Gaby and Mark – sat out).
AJIAN had a chance to absorb their win in round two while Alvis responded in their second game with a fanny, and the Railway Children won their opener. In the final round before lunch AJIAN and Alvis each secured their second wins. After lunch as Alvis sat out a round AJIAN won their third game, and A, M & R also won. In the final round Alvis won early and had to wait for the key result of the last game of the day: consistently accurate pointing by the Railway Children proved too much for AJIAN
So an enjoyable and tight competition ended with the teams in fourth and fifth separated only by a small points difference of three with A, M & R just ahead of J, J & D. The Railway Children were the balance in the middle, winning and losing two conceding almost as many points as they scored. Despite providing the excitement of the day Alan, Jill and Ian with a points difference of +13 lost comfortably to the much superior points difference of Alvis, +27. So congratulations this season go to David A, Gareth and Stephan. And thanks to everyone who participated.”
