It’s that time of the year again when each of the 14 regions of the English Pétanque Association (EPA) start to determine their top eight and next best four triples teams to represent them at the Inter-Regional Championship and Challenge Cup in September, not forgetting the Juniors competition.
Here in our region, Sussex Pétanque (SXP), there are three ‘qualifying’ days. This year they and other SXP competitions are being masterminded by Sussex Playing Officer, our very own Tony Mann.
The first day saw seven club members travel to Crowborough Social Club for Day 1:
AJIT-TATED SEAGULLZZZ – Terry Gibbons, Alan Issler, Ian Maynard (and Joe Simmonds-Issler who was resting up)
ALVIS – David Alfred, Stephan Alfred, Gareth Jarvis
CROWBRIGHT2 – Tony Mann with Alan Constable and Matt Shrimpton from Crowborough SC)
On a warm, sunny but breezy day, the 16 teams present (including one junior team) were randomly divided into four leagues, with the top two teams from each going into the Main rolling knockout and the next two teams into the Plate rolling knockout. Alvis came first in their league (3 wins, +30) and first overall, Crowbright2 came second in their league, so both teams went into the Main, while AJIT went into the Plate.
In the Plate competition, AJIT won two games to reach the final which they only just lost, so coming tenth on the day. With two more qualifying days to go, they thus have every chance of getting into the Championship squad. Good result.
In the Main, Alvis and Crowbright2 met in the semi-final which Tony’s gang won 13-9. After another tight game in the final, Crowbright2 won 13-8, and so came first on the day. Meanwhile, Alvis won their 3rd/4th place game 13-3, and so came third on the day.
Well done to all our players.
Day 2 will take place in Hastings on May 17.
