Competition Secretary, Ian Maynard writes: “Congratulations and thanks to all the competitors. As both the Triples and Mixed Doubles Leagues entered the final weekend we somehow managed to complete all the fixtures! [The tables are now posted under <Club Results>]
On Saturday, without the injured Gareth, David A and Tony with just four boules attempted to win the tournament. The first match was tough eight-bouler against Lisa and Ann, minus the absent Nick – probably the first I’ve known played. Then was the decider against the other all-lad team who also had only one defeat until then. Despite David and Tony getting close, the boules in hand at each end gave Chris, Larry and Rohan the opportunity to secure the result 13-11 to make them the league winners. Undeterred, a win by our dynamic duo against six-boules in their final match was enough to give David, Gareth and Tony the runner-up spot on points difference, ahead Jill C, Pat and me.
Rohan is the club’s triples specialist this season, being in the winning team for both league and tournament.
Imagine playing late after a full day’s work – well this was what the Railway Children did on Sunday playing after a night shift. It put the odds against their better performances but it meant with one triples and some mixed doubles matches both leagues were completed – thanks from the organiser! I’d be even happier if they’d got two more points against David A and Janice as it meant that again Jill and I finished as third-placed team on points difference! [Fear not Ian, your time will come -Ed.] Ann and Tony had already been crowned Mixed Doubles League champions the previous weekend.
Next Sunday, during the AGM, trophies will be awarded to the Champions and runners-up of the five leagues and four all-day tournaments. ”
And finally … one more round of applause to Ian for all his hard work in again organising all the competitions this year, and for producing such well-designed spreadsheets for the the four leagues.
