Deja Vu: BHPC Wins EuroCup Match in Another Sensational Comeback

As about this time a year ago, the club again hosted, on a sunny, warm, late summer’s day, The Bat and Ball PC (Gravesend) in the second round of this year’s EPA Euro Cup for Clubs competition. The match format is two triples games, one of which must be mixed, followed by three doubles games, one of which must also be mixed.

As last year, our home team got off to the worst possible start with both our triples teams – David A/Gareth J/Stephan A and Ian M/Janice D/Tony M – losing to 12 and 8 points respectively, which meant BHPC again had to win all three doubles games to win the match. Talk about history repeating itself.

With an advanced course in pétanque psychology and team selection under his belt, team captain, David cunningly changed the usual team formation, by pairing Gareth and Stephan and Tony and himself. The tactic seemed to be paying off when Gareth and Stephan, finishing first, won 13-4. Meanwhile, the other two games were long, tense affairs, eventuating in Ian and Janice winning 13-12, and David and Tony winning 13-11. Thus our squad again won the match 3-2. Talk about history repeating itself.

Again snatching victory from the jaws of defeat in another exciting comeback, our squad demonstrated its (almost legendary) fighting spirit. Very congratulations to our team and commiserations to The Bat and Ball PC who again took their defeat very graciously. And thanks to those club members present for their support.

The next round of the competition will take place before the end of October.
