BHPC Unveils Revamped Competition Format for 2014

Our imaginative and industrious Competitions Secretary Ian Maynard writes:  “Although Club dates are not yet fixed I want to take this opportunity to whet your appetite with some of the events on offer for club members this season.

Leagues  The Winter Singles League draws to a close on 9 March. This will be followed by a new initiative: two Spring His & Hers [Doubles] Leagues to run through March, April and May. The Summer Triples League will be run for a second year (May to August) to be followed by the traditional Autumn Mixed Doubles League (August to November). This gives us competitive play throughout the year but the smaller divisions allow plenty of time for tournaments and informal club mêlées.

Full-Day Tournaments  This season we are planning on holding just four all-day club competitions: Singles, Triples, Doubles, Mixed Doubles. The hope is to fit in one a month (two on Saturdays and two on Sundays) throughout the summer.

All leagues and one-day tournaments (eight events in all) will count towards Player of the Year.

Half-Day Tournaments  During the season, we plan to run a Mêlée Doubles, a Battle of the Sexes, a Pointing and Shooting challenge, a Women’s Doubles and a Charity Doubles, some of these events to be followed by BBQs.

Playing for BHPC against other clubs  During the season we’ll again be playing friendly fixtures against other clubs. Every club member may play in these matches – teams will be triples or doubles so that all numbers can be accommodated. It’s all great fun and a chance to wear our purple kit with pride. Dates will be published during the season.

Sussex Championships and other Opens  Being EPA-registered means club members who wish to play in more all-day events can enter any Sussex Pétanque (SXP) tournaments or other Open competitions. There are four Sussex championships: Triples (29 June, Crowborough), Doubles (20 July, Hastings), Mixed Doubles (24 August, Crowborough) and Singles (7 September, Brighton). The finalists of the triples and doubles are invited to represent SXP in the Champion of Champions championship (11/12 October).

Playing for SXP  Another opportunity afforded by EPA membership for all our club members is the chance to be selected to play for Sussex in the EPA Inter-Regional Championship and Challenge Trophy (to be played on Hayling Island over the weekend of 13/14 September). There are eight triples teams in the Championship squad, and four teams Challenge squad. Teams may consist of three or four players. Selection of teams (not individual players) to represent Sussex is decided on results from three qualifying tournaments to be held at Crowborough (13 April), our PST (18 May) and Hastings (15 June). Dawn Constable, SXP Secretary, will book accommodation at Hayling, and nearer the time I hope to provide further information on costs and what is available, to those interested.

Keeping Updated  The best way not to miss what’s going on is to subscribe to this website (see right-hand side of this page). Social networkers may wish to join Sussex Pétanque on Facebook. It’s a good place to keep up with fixtures, the antics of fellow Sussex players, etc. (Where else can you see the amazing fancy dress outfits!)

Up Next  Get your partners ready for the upcoming Lads and Lasses Doubles Leagues, and organise your teams to play for Sussex (there were only five players from the club last season at Hayling Island, down from twelve in 2012).

Please let me know if I’ve missed anything, or, again, if you have further suggestions or comments on the above events. Otherwise, just enjoy another season of pétanque!”

Thanks, Ian.
