BHPC Wins EuroCup 2nd Round in Sensational Comeback

Today the club hosted The Bat and Ball PC (Gravesend) in the second round of this year’s EPA Euro Cup for Clubs competition with the aim of finding the best club in England to play their European counterparts next year. As usual, the match consists of two triples games, one of which must be mixed, and three doubles games, one of which must also be mixed.

Despite the many club members who turned out to support them, our home team got off to an untypically bad start, with David/Gareth/Stephan and Ian/Pat/Tony losing their games to 7 and 12 points respectively. At 0-2 down, BHPC had to win all three doubles games to win the match. David and Stephan finished first, winning 13-1. Gareth and Tony, leading most of the way, then won 13-10. All eyes were now on Ian and Janice. They had to win to bring home the bacon (as it were). And they did: 13-10 (continuing their long unbeaten run in EuroCup games).

This was a memorable comeback: it’s not often a squad wins all three doubles games, especially when the pressure is on to avoid losing the match. So, congratulations to our team, and commiserations to The Bat and Ball who took what must have been quite a disappointment very graciously. And thanks to all the club members for their support.

The next round of the competition will take place before the end of October.

Well done everybody! We are slightly bemused that we had no knowledge of the event taking place, and could have watched up to 4.30 or so if we had known. It doesn’t figure on our list of planned events. Are we missing out on newsletters or other means of communication?? Chris and Di
