We knew we were facing a tough match with Royal Albert PC, who supply two of the top eight Sussex Pétanque teams, The Wanderers and Underers, and were entering this competition for the first time.
Indeed, that’s how it turned out when, in the first round of games beginning just after 1 pm, we lost the Mixed Triples (Ian, Janice, Tony) 6-13, and were trailing 3-9 in the Open Triples (David A, Gareth, Stephan). At 8-11, our boys pointed in five points in the last end to win the game. Match score 1-1.
So we now had to win two of the three Doubles games to win the match. David and Stephan finished first, winning 13-3. Ian and Janice were the next to finish, winning 13-4. Although the pressure was now off them, Gareth and Tony eventually lost the longest game of the round 8-13. We thus won the match by 3 games to 2.
After this friendly but competitive encounter, the teams retired to the clubhouse for tasty sandwiches and cake prepared by Janice, our acting Senior Catering Officer.
We now look forward to Round 3, playing away, as we did last year, against an Isle of Wight team, Arreton Barns, sometime before the end of December.
